Chapter Six: Welcome To Lichvania

“Behold, Bonetown,” Devon the Skeleton said as they crested the rise.

They stood looking over a narrow valley. By the ocean, a small town surrounded by a rough rubble and metal wall had grown around a central mansion. Alongside the magic lights of the mansion were the tiny glittering illumination of torches and lanterns coming from more recent buildings.

“Er, no,” said Devon. “The other way.”

They turned to the northern end of the valley to reveal the view that the past half hour of marching had been building towards. It had paid off. And that was saying something, considering the past half hour had been walking up and up and up what seemed to be an endless set of narrow switchbacks. Marc felt the burn all through his calves and shins, and sweat beaded on his face despite the cool night air that blew in from the sea.

But all that was forgotten when he saw the castle.

Starkly backlit against a moon that seemed to be several sizes too huge, the castle was a baroque and obscenely over-designed nested collection of towers. Several towers were entirely freestanding – attached only by flying buttresses and stairs to other portions of the castle. The central keep itself was nearly cylindrical – a huge, brooding black mass of leering gargoyles. The highest point of the castle was a tower attached to a tower attached to the keep proper, and it was tipped by a conical roof, giving the entire place an almost rocket-like appearance.

As Marc watched, the castle was shrouded in a massive cloud of tiny black specks. They formed into a tunnel of blackness that cut across the moon, then spread outwards. Then the air filled with the leathery sounds of beating wings and cheeping sounds. Thousands of massive, vampire bats flew overhead, their eyes glowing with a blood red inner light, like torches in the night. They passed, leaving the entire valley in a kind of stunned silence afterwards.

Marc turned to Devon the Skeleton. “You’re sure she’s not evil?”

“Yes!” Devon snapped.

Tiff, who was the least out of breath of the lot (and that was including the fucking skeletons), put her hands on her hips. “How are we gonna get there?”

“Gloria told her we’d be here,” Devon said.

Another dark shape emerged from the castle. It was clearly larger than the bats, but was too distant to make out clearly. As it grew larger and larger, Marc caught the silhouette shape of leathery wings, the flash of spinning wheels. Red eyes, and the crack of a whip flashed by. Then the shape swung around and landed on the ridge next to them, throwing up furrows of dirt on the ground.

It was a massive coach, pulled by a quartet of midnight black horses that each had huge bat-wings stitched to their backs. The coachman himself was a tall, suited figure with a cylindrical cap that rode the line between a top hat and something more primitive. His hands were clad in white gloves and his face and skin were so sallow and pale that he looked, well, dead.
